ABOUT

The architectural practice was established by Andrew Finlayson in 1998 and based in Comrie, Perthshire.

We are a small practice and seek to offer a close and effective personal service to our clients. A good relationship with your architect is paramount for any project.

Andrew Finlayson studied Architecture in Edinburgh and The United States then worked in various Architectural Practices in London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Oban, Perth and Comrie.

Andrew’s partner, Madeleine Davenport, an experienced plants woman, provides integrated Garden Design Services to clients where required.

THE PROCESS

Our work represents a synthesis of the many forces that shape its final design:

  • The Client brings needs, aspirations, ideas, lifestyle, tastes etc to be made manifest and a budget to be realised.
  • The Building Site or existing building present the specifics of context & orientation.
  • Specialist Consultants such as Engineers, Interior Designers, Quantity Surveyors, Landscape Designers, etc can contribute significantly to a design.
  • Statutory Bodies (Local Authority Planners, Building Standards, etc) may play their part in shaping the project.
  • Builders – Build quality underpins design quality.

HOW WE WORK

Our role as Architects is to guide the shaping of these varying forces into some coherent and attractive whole using all the tools of our craft. It is hoped that a review of our projects might demonstrate that we are unfettered by a specific house style but dedicated rather to producing effective, bright, well functioning buildings with a good sense of proportion, robustness of detail and all with the expectation of producing something of charm, something of hygge (pronounced huga  a Scandinavian word expressing a mood of cosiness and comfortable conviviality)

Above all else these buildings are the product of team work so it is thanks to all the clients, builders, interior designers, consultants and specialists who helped create them.
